LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Wednesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer provided an update on COVID-19 vaccine distribution in the state, along with discussions on a return to in-person learning for public schools.
Among other figures, she was joined by Craig Carmoney, superintendent of the year and Superintendent of Meridian Public Schools in Midland County who was recently appointed to Governor Whitmer’s Student Recovery Advisory Council.
The governor talked about the importance of in-person learning and how the state is committed to keeping Michigan safely moving forward.
It is the goal of Governor Whitmer to have schools reopened for in-person learning on March 1.
“If we follow guidance on masking and hand-washing, and we do our testing and tracing, facility upgrades and operational changes, I know we will be successful and ensure our kids continue to learn and to grow,” Whitmer said.
She also spoke on teachers and their efforts during the pandemic.
“Teachers work hard during a regular school year, but over this last year, they’ve been heroic, and I want them to know that we are so grateful for everything they have done and the sacrifices they have made, and all that they will continue to do on behalf of our kids,” Whitmer said.
She said guidance for re-opening schools will be rolling out. Some school districts, including the City of Kalamazoo, will still be operating under remote learning.
