DETROIT (WKZO) — A new report finds Michigan smokers will spend over 1.4-million dollars in their lifetime on the habit. The “Wallet-Hub” report showed Michigan ranked 33rd in the nation while Alaska had the highest average cost of over two-million dollars during a smoker’s life.
The survey used the average of one pack of cigarettes a day for 51-years, plus the amount of money the person may have earned by investing the cash instead. They also used data on health costs related to smoking from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Also included was information from the Federal Reserve Bank that found smokers earn eight-percent less in wages than non-smokers.
