KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Western Michigan University has announced the winners of something they are calling the Bronco Challenge.
Four teams competed this year for $19,000 in prize money to come up with a sustainability plan to improve life in one of 17 areas, poverty, equity, hunger, peace and justice, clean water and several others.
The winner this year was a team that took up the issue of employer ethics and fairness in the international workplace, by using UPC barcodes on products to show their fair trade status.
Cloe Fetterolf, who was on the winning team says it was not only a useful plan, but a great learning experience.
Dr. Neil Drobny, who put the competition together, says they were limited by the fact that too few students knew about the competition this year. He hopes to see more students compete next year.
The winning team was announced at this week’s WMU Board of Trustees meeting, after the competition concluded last week.
The first place team received $10,000, 2nd was good for $6,000, and the 3rd place team split $3,000.
