PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A teen girl is now in custody in connection to the social media threat targeting Portage Northern High School.
The 17-year-old Kalamazoo resident, who is a student at the school, made the threat just after midnight on Tuesday prompting the entire Portage northern campus to close Tuesday morning.
Portage Public Safety officers conducted a search of the suspect’s residents and did not locate any weapons or any indication that she planned on carrying out the threat, so it was deemed not credible.
The girl is now in the Kalamazoo County Jail and officers say they will be seeking a charge of making a terrorist threat or false report of terrorism, which is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
This comes after a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old were arrested for two threats against Loy Norrix High School which sparked a series of copycat threats targeting Kalamazoo, Portage, and Parchment schools earlier this week. So far none of them have been deemed credible.
