KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer is moving on the PFAS issue asking the Legislature for supplemental funding for PFAS research and remediation efforts.
That could include extending water mains to homeowners in Cooper and Richland Townships, who are in PFAS hot zones and currently using filters.
She says municipalities will be able to apply for grants for such projects, if the legislature approves the funding.
Tuesday she directed the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team, to do the research needed to set safe drinking water standards for PFAS and other potentially toxic industrial contaminants that the Federal Government has so far failed to establish.
A number of state agencies and several other states say 70 parts per trillion is too high.
She wants a recommendation by October 1, 2019.
