CASS COUNTY, MI – UPDATE: Charges have been filed against a father who shot his son in the head during a fight, according to a report from WWMT Tuesday.
Previously, authorities had reported that 29-year-old Cody Gonder of Marcellus died as a result of gunshot injuries sustained during a fight with his father, 55-year-old Russell Gonder.
Authorities say the son was shot in the head by his father during a fight after both had been drinking.
The incident happened on Wednesday, May 26th in the 1100 block of Van Buren Street in Marcellus Township shortly after 9:30 p.m.
Russell said he was able to disarm his son and toss the gun aside during one altercation, but then Cody came back. Deputies said Russell disarmed him again and then shot Cody in the head.
Cody was in critical condition in the hospital until Saturday, May 29 when he succumbed to his injuries.
According to the new update from WWMT Tuesday, Russel Gonder is now facing eight felony charges, which was confirmed by Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz.
He faces the following charges:
- Two counts of firearms discharge under influence,
- Careless discharge causing injury or death,
- Three counts of felony firearm,
- Firearm discharge while aimed without malice but with injury, and
- Possessing firearms under the influence.
At the time of this reporting, an arraignment has not yet been set.
