KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County Parks Department officials are declaring this year’s Kalamazoo County Fair a success and they are mulling over what they should do for an encore.
It had been a few years since the county staged a full-blown fair, because it had been losing attendance and money, and then COVID-19 came along.
Event Services manager Mandy Eldred says attendance was nearly 24,000 over the five-day event and they made their budget.
She says it gave a big lift to the 4H displays and people had fun.
60% of that revenue came from a subsidy provided by the Kalamazoo County board, so it wasn’t really self-sufficient.
County Parks director Dave Rachowicz gave the board several options to choose from including repeating this year’s success.
He says that’s the consensus of everyone involved in this year’s event.
Rachowicz says a big expansion would mean spending more money on acts, carnival rides and fairground improvements and bigger risks.
It will be up to the board to decide on September 15th.
