KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Chick-fil-A will be opening a second location in Kalamazoo County, MLive confirmed Tuesday.
Although this is the second location in the county, it will be the first in Kalamazoo. It has been confirmed that it will be built at the corner of Drake Road and West Main Street.
The first location is open in Portage on South Westnedge Avenue.
Last April, the Kalamazoo City Commission approved a rezoning request for that area and the Chick-fil-A name began to circle around as the possible operator.
However, some city officials have disagreed with the idea stating that the owners of the national chicken chain have actively supported hate groups and have opposed gay rights efforts nationwide.
Commissioners still moved forward with the rezoning after the attorney reminded them that the firm has met all the city’s requirements.
Construction equipment began appearing at the location as early as January. It’s unclear how long it will take to construct or when the restaurant could open, but the company told MLive it will aim to open by early 2021.
