KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo City Commission has agreed to rezone land for a Chik-fil-a restaurant at West Main and Drake, despite opposition from the local LGBT community.
They say that the owners of the national chicken chain have actively supported hate groups and have opposed gay rights efforts nationwide.
Vice-Mayor Erin Knott, who is Interim-Director of Equality Michigan, a state wide gay rights organization, agreed with the opponents and talked at length about what the company’s owners have done.
Mayor Bobby Hopewell wondered if the local developers had reminded the Chick-fil-a Company that the city has a human rights ordinance that they will be required to follow.
Attorney Pat Lennon said they had not, but will immediately.
Commissioners approved the rezoning, after the attorney reminded them that the firm
has met all the city’s requirements, and legally they had little choice. Even Knott voted yes.
