KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Arrests followed as hundreds turned out for a rally in Bronson Park in Kalamazoo to protest after the Trump administration announced it would be ending the DACA program for young undocumented immigrants.
Speakers said this group, many of whom are students, holding down jobs or are in the military, may be the last group any country would want to lose. Many have few or no memories of the places they were born.
Over a half-dozen protestors were arrested for impeding traffic when they took the protest to West Michigan and South Westnedge avenues and stood in the roadway.
Earlier in the day, Western Michigan University leaders made it clear they are standing with DACA students. A smaller rally was held at the flagpoles in the center of campus.
Western Michigan University President Dr. Edward Montgomery spoke against the Trump administration’s decision to send the DACA program to Congress for a legislative solution.
There were some students at the rally who want DACA to end, holding firm to the line that anyone in the country illegally must be deported.
