KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Construction began last week on the Kalamazoo Avenue infrastructure project, marking the next phase of the City’s Streets for All initiative and a significant investment in downtown infrastructure.
City officials say the project will rebuild Kalamazoo Avenue from the ground up, replacing aging water, sewer, and storm water infrastructure while burying overhead electrical utilities and upgrading sidewalks, lighting, landscaping, traffic signals, and other public amenities. Work will continue through the 2026 construction season before resuming and being completed in 2027.
They say one of the first interesting discoveries during the Kalamazoo Avenue reconstruction has been the original brick street hidden beneath the asphalt. Kalamazoo Avenue was first paved with brick in 1905. Most of the roadway was reconstructed with concrete in 1938 before being resurfaced with asphalt in the 1950s and 1960s, leaving the original brick buried beneath the street for decades.
