KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A new public health clinic for Kalamazoo’s student aged population will be one new feature of Kalamazoo Public Schools this year, but it will be open to serve anyone in the county between the ages of 5 and 21.
The facility will provide a range of services to students, most will require parental consent, except those exempted by state law.
County Health Department director Jim Rutherford says the facility is being funded by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Michigan Department of Education, Kalamazoo Public Schools, and his department.
They had planned to be opened by the beginning of the school year, but construction is a few weeks behind schedule.
It will be called the Knights Health Center and will be located at Loy Norrix High School.
When it does open, the clinic will keep regular hours year-round, regardless of the school calendar, and more information about it is expected to be released at that time.
School-based health centers are not permitted to dispense or prescribe birth control or counselling, referrals, or services to terminate a pregnancy.
