PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — After more than a year in the making, the newly renovated Portage District Library is set to open it’s doors at 300 Library Lane Monday, May 9, and 9 a.m.
Library officials are inviting patrons during the grand reopening week to check out the new space, check out materials, browse the library’s history, and participate in activities designed for all age levels.
To mark the occasion, they’re inviting the public to a short ribbon cutting ceremony which will take place 30 minutes prior to opening at 8:30.
The library closed on April 12, 2021 as it moved to it’s temporary location at 5528 Portage Road to make way for numerous renovations and improvements.
Improvements and upgrades include a redesigned entrance with accessibility improvements, a two-floor expansion on the east side of the building, additional small meeting rooms and study spaces, a maker space and creation station, family bathrooms, a mother’s room, along with upgrades to existing infrastructure.
The Portage District Library was built in 1976, and went through it’s first significant renovation in 1996 which created the atrium and added space to the lower level.
25 years later in 2019, Portage voters supported a request to increase the Library’s millage by 0.5 mills for ten years in order to finance the strategic plan created by the Portage District Library Board and Staff in 2016 and 2017 which included expanding the Library to accommodate a growing community.
The library will be open Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (until the Sunday before Memorial Day).
