KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The two survivors of the Feb. 20 shooting rampage that left six dead in the Kalamazoo area are now in fair conditiion nearly two weeks after both entered hospitals near death.
The conditions for both 14-year-old Abigail Kopf and 25-year-old Tiana Carruthers were upgraded Tuesday.
Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting said the community has done a wonderful job of coming forward to help the families, contributing to a special fund set up by the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek Community Foundations and the United Way.
Thousands have also been donated to separate GoFundMe pages for Kopf and Carruthers.
Getting said U.S. Attorney Patrick Miles has opened their victim assistance office to this case.
“Crime Victim Services at the state level has been in touch with us and have made resources available as well that we’re going to be able to use to assist our victims in this case,” Getting said.
He says they even got a promise from President Obama that he would help any way he could.
UPDATE 3/2 at 10 a.m.: According to the family’s GoFundMe page, 14-year-old Abigail Kopf opened her eyes and recognized her parents for the first time since the shooting.
