LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A new executive order by the Gov. Grethen Whitmer temporarily cancels all events with more than 250 people to prevent exposure to coronavirus.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-5 Friday canceling all events attended by 250 people and all assemblages in shared spaces over 250 people.
The order takes effect on Friday, March 13th at 5:00 p.m. and ends Sunday, April 5th at 5 p.m.
On Thursday Governor Whitmer ordered all K-12 school buildings to close to students from Monday, March 16th until Sunday, April 5th.
That decision came immediately after state health officials confirmed the 12th positive case of coronavirus in Michigan.
Earlier in the week a state of emergency was declared when the first two cases were confirmed in Oakland and Wayne counties on the east side of the state.
All state universities have since suspended in-person classes for the next few weeks, and multiple organizations, services, and events have either temporarily shut down or postponed programming.
Chief Medical Executive Dr. Jonleigh Khaldun said in an accompanying statement:
“It’s crucial that everyone in Michigan follow these orders and make smart choices that will slow the spread of the virus, including practicing good hygiene and social distancing. We will continue to work with the governor and our partners across state government to protect Michigan families and businesses.”
