LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Republican lawmakers have sued Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer over her extension of the State of Emergency order.
The lawmakers say Whitmer acted “beyond her authority” by excluding the legislature from the process. Majority Leader Mike Shirkey said Whitmer left them no choice but to seek legal action.
House Speaker Lee Chatfield claims the governor failed to comply with the law and did not follow the Michigan Constitution.
Democrats say the action is purely political and they will not support the measure. Whitmer’s Attorney General Dana Nessel has stated the executive orders are legal and enforceable.
