KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – As the school year winds down toward summer vacation, student leaders took center stage at the most recent meeting of the Kalamazoo Public Schools board to update trustees on what they have been up to this year.
The Youth Advisory Council at Loy Norrix High School had a mission to promote their new school-based Student Health Facility, which provides free access to medical and mental health professionals for students, area wide.
Michael Harrison and Gertrude Herman-Wilmarth say they promoted it’s access to the students locally and traveled to Lansing to lobby for funding for the creation of additional clinics statewide.
Kalamazoo County Administrator Kevin Catlin says their Health and Community Services department has been mentoring and working with those students.
Student leaders from Kalamazoo Central High School talked about their diversity programs, and YAC representatives from Phoenix High, The Innovative Learning Program and the Virtual Learning Program also talked about what they have done to improve things at their uniquely designed programs to meet different student needs and requirements.
Almost everything done at school board meetings is focused on improving the educational opportunities of students, but actually getting to hear directly from them on how its working out is a relatively rare experience for the trustees.
