KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – There have been two shooting deaths in the past two days in Kalamazoo, and Mayor David Anderson says it’s time the city teams up to reduce gun violence.
It continues a trend of escalating gun assaults and killings in Kalamazoo that began with the pandemic last year, which is part of a national trend.
Mayor Anderson says he has been in contact with other local leaders to talk about solutions.
“People in our neighborhoods are suffering, and it is most certainly the time for us to very seriously talk publicly with our partners,” Anderson said at a meeting Tuesday.
Public Safety officials say the problem is bigger than they can deal with on their own, adding that the courts, schools and other police agencies have to work on it together.
Anderson says meetings are planned.
“I’m looking very much forward to some very serious action and conversation about that, within short order, and look to our partners to join hands with us in that effort,” Anderson said.
Particularly disturbing is the age of many of the gunmen, who are said to be in the mid-teens, too young for them to face adult sanctions.
