KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A group of determined and angry residents told Kalamazoo city commissioners in no uncertain terms that they oppose plans for a POD community on an empty lot near Lake St. and the Business loop. across the street from Julianna’s.
Even though Housing Resources Incorporated is only exploring the idea of locating their 50 POD homes there, nearby residents, business owners and employees all expressed strong opposition.
One of the opponents had to be escorted from the chamber by the police chief when he refused to step away from the podium.
Supporters of the POD project also appeared. All three of the sites HRI has considered have been in the Edison neighborhood.
Mayor Dave Anderson had to remind the crowd that it’s just a proposal at this stage, by a local housing agency.
He says before anything is decided there will be more community discussion.
H.R.I. has had the PODs in storage for three years now due to the pandemic and their inability to find a site for the structures, which are just large enough for a couple of beds, some storage and require separate group bathrooms and kitchen facilities.
