KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – After criticism that not enough is being done to help the homeless, Kalamazoo city commissioners will take a closer look at finding solutions to the affordable housing crisis in the community late this afternoon.
A majority of the commission have first-hand experience working in affordable housing, and cites it as one of their reasons for running.
Mayor Dave Anderson says a lot of money and time has already been devoted to addressing the issue, $29-million this year alone.
Commissioner Qianna Decker has asked the city attorney to look into rent control.
She says even though Michigan law currently bans it, a bill has been introduced in Lansing to change it.
Commissioner Chris Preadel backs an idea called home sharing, which connects older residents to take in renters.
He says all they need is someone to organize it.
