KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – With the planned closing of the Alma Powell Branch, which is housed at the Douglass Community Association on Paterson Street, the Kalamazoo Public Library is planning two public forums this week to explain why that’s happening and outline plans to continue service on the city’s Northside.
The first forum will be held Tuesday from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the Van Deusen Room of the Central Library at 315 South Rose Street. From 6:00-8:00 p.m. a forum will be held in the auditorium of the Lincoln International Studies School at 912 North Burdick Street.
A change in security protocols at the Douglass Community Association meant the library was in violation of the Michigan Library Privacy Act. The Alma Powell Branch will close February 3
In the interim KPL intends to deploy its mobile branch in the neighborhood while it explores its next steps, which could include a new stand-alone branch that could be housed in an existing building or the library system could build a brand new branch.
Kalamazoo Public Library Interim Director Terry New says there will be two portions for each forum:
First hour: KPL Update
· Why KPL is suspending services and relocating the Alma Powell Branch Library.
· What interim services/programs/outreach will be provided.
· How KPL is planning for both an interim location and a brand-new Alma Powell Branch Library.
Second Hour: Public Feedback–facilitated by Dr. Karika Parker
· What library services, programs, outreach, and collections would you like to see offered to Northside neighborhoods?
· What is your vision for a new Alma Powell Branch Library?
Public feedback can also be given online for those unable to attend either session. Inquiries can be directed to director@kpl.gov.
