KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A public hearing on a consent agreement for modifications at Graphic Packaging turned into a protest against the paperboard recycler and state environment officials last night. While these plant modifications won’t increase emissions, they apparently won’t decrease them either and aren’t related to the odors, according to Graphic Packaging. They say the new equipment was installed over a year ago. Most of the northside residents who spoke at the event said Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy officials must do more to reduce the emissions, or shut down the plant.
They say the fines the state imposes are too small.
Anger and frustration was expressed that the state agency won’t or can’t do more, and they charge the company seems indifferent.
