KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Today is the first of two school count days, when attendance in class is particularly critical in Michigan. Schools receive their state funding based on their headcount, which is based on attendance records today and a second day later in the school year. Kalamazoo Public Schools superintendent Darrin Slade says over the next week, students who have not been showing up for class could be getting a visit from school officials at their home. He is calling it a “Knock and Talk” campaign.
He says teams of two will be asking parents questions about why their children aren’t in class.
It’s just a part of a much larger campaign that Dr. Slade is launching to crack down on truancy and to get kids in class. 90% of a district’s official headcount will be set today, and the other 10% on a date in February.
