DOWAGIAC, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Dowagiac residents can get a free filter for lead in the city’s drinking water. City Manager Kevin Anderson says the lead is getting into the water supply through pipes in homes and the lead service lead pipes, not from the city’s water source.
“What comes out of the plant does not have lead in it,” says Anderson. “As it goes through the pipes, it doesn’t have lead. Where we have some incidences are in the lead service leads and then lead inside the house.”
Tests turned up 17 parts per billion for lead, above the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy’s action level of 15 parts per billion. Anderson says they will ask the state for money to make pipe replacement.
