KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education held virtual interviews with the first three of the six semi-finalist seeking the Superintendent’s post Monday night.
It’s clear the questions they are asking were shaped in part by the board’s experiences with their last Superintendent and the big problems urban districts are facing.
The candidates were all asked how they would become engaged with the community. Dr. Thomas Rogers of Tennessee says he would meet it head on.
Dr. Marcey Sorenson, who works in Fort Worth, Texas says it’s all about presence.
Dearborn Heights Superintendent Dr. Ty Weeks says he likes to mix ideas with food.
Community engagement was one of the perceived shortcomings of the previous superintendent.
These interviews are only part of the equation for trustees, who also have access to resumes, reference checks and other information to base their decisions.
The school board plans to interview three more candidates this Thursday evening and then narrow the field further before inviting finalists back for a second round of questions in person next week.
The District is trying something new. They are offering live translations of the interviews in Spanish and Arabic by phone.
