CASS COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Two crashes in Cass County occurred on Saturday, January 21 within less than of an hour of each other injured three people combined.
The first one, a single vehicle crash causing two injuries, happened around 7:06 p.m. on Hess Road., north of Pine Lake Street in Jefferson Township.
Initial investigation showed the driver Jeri Rickeys of Vandalia was traveling northbound on Hess Road when she left the roadway and crashed head on with a tree.
Rickeys was initially trapped inside of her vehicle until she was removed by Emergency Medical Personnel. She was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for life threatening injuries. Her passenger, Thomas Wagers was also transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for injuries.
Authorities say seat belts were not worn at the time of the crash. They also went onto say that speed, alcohol and drugs are also considered factors.
The second crash happened around 7:55 p.m. at M-62 and Harris Street in Jefferson Township.
Deputies say 48-year-old Jess Evan Cooper of Onia AR, was traveling north on M-62 when he lost control of his vehicle and ran off the roadway to the east , striking a mailbox, shrubs and small trees.
Cooper was transported to Corewell Health in Niles for injuries. Cooper’s passenger, 53-year-old Russell James Wilson of Edwardsburg was not injured.
Authorities say although seat belts were worn, alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
