KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Today, Monday, August 29, is the first day of school in Kalamazoo County, and for the first time in a few years, classes will begin in it’s largest school district without any mandatory covid requirements in place. But that doesn’t mean Kalamazoo Public Schools have put the pandemic behind them.
Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri says they are still recommending that masks be worn and that students get the vaccine.
Raichoudhuri says it’s all voluntary, and that the district will continue to make sure resources are on hand and that all necessary precautions are taken.
She also says they now have enough bus drivers to avoid the rolling route cancellations they were forced to impose last school year, at least for now.
She also reminds parents to make arrangements so that their children have daycare, should inclement weather cancel classes.
Portage city officials also weighed in on the first day of school by reminding residents that thousands of students countywide will be joining the morning commute.
Mayor Patricia Randall says while you may be seeing more students, you should also see fewer construction cones, at least in Portage.
Officials are also reminding motorists that they see a bus with bus with flashing red light’s, they need to stop a considerable distance away, or risk a ticket.
