BURR OAK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A chain reaction four vehicle crash Friday afternoon near Burr Oak in St. Joseph County has left three people in critical condition.
Just after 4:00 p.m. St. Joseph County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of U.S. 12 and Burr Oak Rd in Burr Oak Township for the report of a multiple vehicle crash involving injuries.
Their investigation shows that a 16-year-old driver and a 17-year-old passenger were driving westbound on U.S. 12 in a Chevrolet Silverado. Their vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a Buick Encore driven by 20-year-old Nayeli Delapaz-Arroyo.
The Silverado continued westbound and collided head-on with a Nissan NV3500 van driven by Juan Nino-Ramirez. That rendered the vehicle disabled in the roadway, where it was struck by a second Chevrolet Silverado travelling eastbound on U.S. 12.
Both occupants of the original Silverado and Nino-Ramirez, the driver of the Nissan, were airlifted to a Kalamazoo area hospital. They are listed in critical condition. A passenger in the van was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
Due to their age, the occupants of the original vehicle are not being identified.
The crash remains under investigation.
