San Diego Padres starting pitcher Casey Mize left Saturday night’s game versus the visiting Minnesota Twins with a right ankle sprain with two outs in the top of the third inning.
Manager Craig Stammen and the training staff came out ahead of the inning to check on Mize after he appeared to be favoring the ankle while warming up. Mize took two extra warmup pitches and Stammen allowed him to stay in.
Mize got the inning’s first two hitters out before Ryan Jeffers laced a double to left. At that point, Stammen came out to replace him. The team announced the extent of the injury the following inning.
Mize allowed four hits and four runs in 2 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out none. Kyle Hart relieved him and promptly allowed an RBI single to Kody Clemens to give Minnesota a 4-1 lead.
