PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Portage has dedicated a park to the memory and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
It’s been planned for sometime and is now under construction at the corner of Mall Drive and King Drive near the Crossroads Mall.
Mayor Patricia Randall says it will be filled with flowers and shade trees, walkways and benches, with five bronze statues that will depict Dr. King and some of his messages.
Local activist Dr. Manifa Jumani has been the guiding force behind the project. She says its a fitting tribute that has taken years to realize. She says there was some opposition, but also kindred spirits who made it possible.
Several dozen local officials and residents turned out for the unveiling of the park’s sign Friday Morning
The new park should be open by this fall.
The unveiling was timed to coincide with this weekend’s Juneteenth national holiday.
