SALEM TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One person is dead and an Allegan County Sheriff’s Department deputy is injured after an altercation between the two during a traffic stop last night.
The Michigan State Police Fifth District Special Investigation Section has been assembled to investigate the officer involved shooting at the request of the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office. In a tweet, the Michigan State Police say the incident happened shortly after 10:00 p.m. Thursday on 26th Street near 136th Avenue in Salem Township.
They say the preliminary investigation shows there was some type of physical altercation between the deputy and the suspect. The deputy fired his weapon at least once, killing the suspect. The deputy did suffer some non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.
WWMT-TV has identified the dead man as 22-yearold Joseph Nagle of Comstock Park, Michigan.
The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation and an internal review by Allegan County.
