COOPER TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The fire marshal is still working to determine the exact cause of the blaze, but dozens of people were displaced after a large apartment fire in Kalamazoo County Thursday evening.
No residents were hurt in the blaze at the Cooper’s Landing Apartments in Cooper Township, near Kalamazoo. Cooper Township Fire Chief Terry Emig said flames were coming off a third-floor deck and going into the loft area.
One firefighter was injured when the ceiling collapsed on him. He was treated at the scene.
Cooper Township Fire Chief Terry Emig told WWMT-TV that four to six apartment units were damaged. Because crews had to shut off the power and there was no water, around 40 people in the building were displaced. The Red Cross is assisting those residents.
Emig said he believed the fire started on the exterior of the building, possibly from an air conditioning unit, but the fire marshal was working to determine the exact cause.
