LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Tuesday, June 14, awarded more than $1.7 million in Neighborhood Enhancement Program grants to 33 local governments and nonprofit groups.
The grants will go towards helping residents make home repairs, emergency efficiency upgrades, and neighborhood amenity improvements.
The funding comes on the heels of a historic announcement from Whitmer to launch the first-ever Statewide Housing Plan to create or preserve 75,000 housing units, with the goal of increasing home ownership and reducing homelessness.
“Every Michigander deserves a safe, affordable place to call home and a vibrant community that they can be proud of,” said Whitmer.“Today’s Neighborhood Enhancement Program grants will help local officials and nonprofits complete home repairs, make energy efficiency upgrades, and fund neighborhood amenity projects.”
Some Southwest Michigan cities are on the list to receive a portion of the grants: Dowagiac – $75,000, Hastings – $75,000, Three Rivers – $50,000, Battle Creek – 75,000, and Cassopolis – $75,000.
The funding is set to be distributed to 11 local units of government and 22 nonprofit agencies serving both urban and rural communities.
Officials say residents of the communities slated to receive a portion of the grants can expect to see neighborhood improvements as early as this summer.
