LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Michigan legislature, based on a push by majority Republicans, will be joining as the defendant in the lawsuit over the constitutionality of the state’s 1931 abortion ban.
Republican lawmakers say they have an overwhelming interest in defending state laws, as Attorney General Dana Nessel has said she will not defend the abortion ban.
The legislature’s court filing says if Roe v. Wade is overturned, the ban needs to be revisited through “debate and compromise” and not through court edicts.
Democrats in the House and Senate, as well as Nessel, have condemned the move.
