LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 7, 2022) – As survivors and relatives of people who were killed in last month’s mass shootings in New York and Texas testify before the US House Oversight Committee on Wednesday, Michigan is preparing to take some action on its own.
Later this month, a special House School Safety Task Force, made up of four Republican and four Democratic representatives, is expected to provide a six-month progress report, along with presenting a multi-bill package of legislation aimed at enacting some of their recommendations. Second-term GOP lawmaker Luke Meerman of Coopersville, one of the co-chairs of this group, said in an appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town” on Monday:
“What you’ll see in the consensus report is some fairly substantial things that we have laid out – $70 million for more school resource officers, a better platform for some information sharing, with the parents’ permission, between the mental health providers and others. It’s real good stuff.”
The Task Force was created shortly after the November 30 shooting at Oxford High School.
