KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Second year undergraduate students at Western Michigan University will soon be eligible for paid internships or other professional opportunities.
WMU President Edward Montgomery made the announcement of the expanded paid internship program at a Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday, April 21st.
The new program, which was assembled by funding from the $550 million Empowering Futures Gift, will initially create 100 internships for the 2022-23 academic year.
WMU officials says the internships will be funded at approximately $15 dollars per hour for 20 hours per week during a 12-week period.
Montgomery went onto say that the new internship is one of many new initiatives launching at WMU to help lower barriers to higher education and benefit the community by providing talented interns to government, non-profits and small businesses who may not be able to afford them otherwise.
The multi-million dollar donation to WMU is also funding full-ride scholarships for low-income students.
