KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo City Commission has formally approved the city’s budget for this 2022.
It’s bigger than usual, largely because of the influx of new revenues from the Foundation for Excellence, the State of Michigan, and federal COVID-19 relief dollars.
Mayor Dave Anderson says its a living document, subject to amendment as the year goes on.
The new 2022 $245.4 million budget features $81.3 million in capital improvements. The city says $39 million will be spent on the water system and $17.7 million will go toward the wastewater system. In addition, $13.7 million will be for improvements on major streets, $9.4 million will go toward general capital improvement programs, and $1.6 million will benefit local streets.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Director Dorla Bonner says the city will finally be putting its money where its mouth is on the issue of racism, as her’s is now a stand-alone department for the city.
The commission also approved the schedule of fees city departments will charge for various services.
While tax rates won’t be going up, home values are rising and that could mean a bump in tax bills from last year, subject to the Headley Amendment, which limits property tax increases.
