KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Christmas can be a joyous day, but also a trashy one with gift wrapping and other materials considered.
This year, Kalamazoo area homeowners are being asked to hang on to all Styrofoam waste after buying electronics and other goods online.
It can be recycled, according to Kalamazoo City Commissioner Jeanne Hess.
“Please don’t throw your Styrofoam into the landfills,” Hess said.
Hess adds that a local environmental group holds Styrofoam collections periodically, and were recently reminded that they could be better timed.
“Forward-thinking residents have said, why don’t we have a pickup on January 1st after the holidays?” Hess said.
She says the City is shoring up the date and lining up volunteers for a New Year’s Day collection of the materials.
“So that Number Six Foam, I believe that we are going to be able to do that,” Hess said. “Keep an eye out on your city media for that, because there will be a drop-off at Mayor’s Riverfront Park.”
Styrofoam is essentially plastic that can be repurposed to make everything from toys to building materials.
A collection had already been planned for late January.
