KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A former Kalamazoo pastor accused in sex trafficking will receive a new lawyer, according to an update from WWMT Tuesday.
Former pastor Stricjavvar “Strick” Strickland is accused of paying teen boys for sexual acts, and faces a number of charges in connection.
A motion to dismiss those charges earlier this month was not granted by a judge. Strickland’s wife, Jazmonique, was accused of similar charges, but those were dropped earlier this year.
Strickland had said that since those charges were dropped against his wife, they should be dropped against him as well. The judge denied the motion on the basis of each party being charged for their own actions.
In the latest development reported Tuesday, Strickland will now have an assigned public defender in this case, who will replace his former attorney Michael Hills.
Hills said Strickland is unable to continue paying for his services, with Strickland commenting he is unable to make more money.
A court appearance will occur on November 18 to assign the new attorney.
