BIG RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Western Michigan hockey team scored three goals in the third period to come back and defeat Ferris State, 4-3, on the road at Ewigleben Arena on Saturday night.
WMU trailed 2-1 entering the final 20 minutes when Ethen Frank scored his third goal of the season at 10:36 to tie it up at 2-2. Drew Worrad found him open in the bottom of the left circle and he fired it into the top-right corner of the net for his third goal of the season.
FSU responded at 12:18 when Ethan Stewart his second of the goal of the night. Brand Bussi made a save on a shot by Jake Transit but the rebound kicked out to the left and Stewart rushed in to tap it into the net, giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
Cole Gallant tied it up at 3-3 at 16:40 after a tremendous individual effort for his first goal of the season. Cedric Fiedler played a stretch pass to Gallant just in front of the FSU blue line. Gallant was able to split two Bulldog defenders and put a shot under Logan Stein’s glove and into the net. Fiedler picked up his second assist of the season on the game-tying goal.
Just 2:04 later Jason Polin scored the game-winner for his first goal of the season. Paul Washe won a battle on the wall at the right edge of the Ferris State blue line and dropped a no-look pass to Polin, who came streaking through the neutral zone. Polin had an open look on goal and beat Stein on his stick side.
The Broncos outshot the Bulldogs 26-23 on the night but were held scoreless on five power plays. Bussi made 20 saves to pick up his second win of the season.
Ferris State jumped out to a 2-0 lead with pair of goals later in the first period. Marshall Moise scored on a shot from the right circle to push ahead 1-0 at 13:07. Stewart netted his first of the night minutes later at 17:36, making move around a Bronco defender and then scoring on an out-stretched Bussi to make it 2-0.
Ronnie Attard cut the lead in half in the second period on his first goal of the season. He fired a blast at 11:45 and it deflected past Stein and into the net. Worrad picked up his first assist of the night and Frank tallied his second helper.
Western Michigan has next weekend off before a home-and-home series with No. 3 Michigan. The Broncos travel to Ann Arbor on Friday, Oct. 22 for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop before hosting the Wolverines on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 1-888-4-WMUTIX and online at www.wmubroncos.com/tickets.
