KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County commissioners will take a look at all the potential cuts coming from the Trump administration Tuesday afternoon.
County board chair Jen Strebs has issued dire warnings about what could be in their future, saying “The challenges before our community are extremely great and the times ahead of us unfortunately look to be extremely grave.”
She says programmatic cuts could result in hard times for the community’s needy, and layoffs in local government.
“We’re going to identify the number of staff in county government that involved the populations that they’re starting the number of people that those programs touch.”
Strebs says they are organizing to bring other local units of government into the discussion.
“To begin bringing our municipal leaders together in real dialogue rather than what often can become the case for competition.”
County Administrator Kevin Catlin says they have been compiling information for the last month for the presentation at their Committee of the Whole meeting.
“We’ve already done a lot of the work in terms of the financial impact but now we’ll kind of look at what those programs are, what’s being delivered and then you know, the kind impact that will have at the local level,” says Catlin.
To date, no cuts have been allowed or approved, but they have been threatened, and more are anticipated.
