Meat prices continue to head higher with beef registering a 12% increase, poultry 6% and pork 10% compared to this time a year ago.
As to what’s behind the price spike Carolyn Chelius who tracks food prices for USDA says livestock feed has risen between 20 and 30 percent in that time frame. On top of that transportation prices have increased and demand is up as well both domestically and internationally while supply has stayed low to stable.
She’s looking at higher pricing for meat next year as well but there are no guarantees as, you may recall, a year back the expectation had been for declining food prices during 2021.
