KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Murder charges have been issued against a Saginaw man accused in a fatal crash that killed an elderly Schoolcraft couple last May.
Previously, charges had been authorized earlier this month against 27-year-old Ezra Phillips of Saginaw.
The incident stems from a crash that occurred last May, and occurred on US-131 in Schoolcraft. The couple was identified as 83-year-old Joel Shaffer and his wife, 84-year-old Dolores Shaffer, both of Schoolcraft.
Phillips was said to have been driving 115 miles per hour before the crash, and 84 miles per hour when he crashed his vehicle into the one driven by the Shaffer couple.
Police also said Phillips was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time.
On Wednesday, Phillips was arraigned in Kalamazoo on the following charges –
- Two counts of second-degree murder
- Two counts of operating under the influence / impaired by alcohol causing death
- Two counts of driving with a suspended license and causing death
His next court date will take place on August 4.
