KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – UPDATE: Tuesday, WWMT reported that charges have been issued against a man involved in a crash that killed a Schoolcraft couple last May.
Previously, police had reported that a couple had been killed in a crash that occurred on US-131 in Schoolcraft. They were later identified as 83-year-old Joel Shaffer and his wife, 84-year-old Dolores Shaffer, both of Schoolcraft.
On Tuesday, WWMT reported that charges had been filed against 27-year-old Ezra Phillips of Saginaw.
The report said Phillips was driving over 100 miles per hour when he crashed his vehicle into the one driven by the Shaffer couple.
Police also said Ezra Phillips was driving under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred.
Phillips now faces six total charges, all of which have been authorized by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office:
- Two counts of second-degree murder
- Two counts of operating under the influence / impaired by alcohol causing death
- Two counts of driving with a suspended license and causing death
Phillips has not been arrested or arraigned at this time, according to the report.
