KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An investigation earlier this week led to one of the biggest drug busts related to opioids ever in Kalamazoo County.
On Wednesday, investigators with KVET executed search warrants at four locations around the city of Kalamazoo. They say the investigations were in direct response to a recent increase in opiate-related overdoses and deaths in the city.
The locations of the executed search warrants were in the 3300 block of Lincolnshire Blvd., 1300 block of N. Church St, 100 block of E. Maple St., and the 800 block of Hazard St.
Two men from Kalamazoo, a 33-year-old and a 28-year-old were arrested, accused of selling and distributing the drugs, and are facing several felony charges. During the investigation, approximately 110 grams of fentanyl was discovered. Authorities also found a large amount of suspected ecstasy, three firearms, ammunition, and over $18,000 in cash.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that can be 30 to 50 times more potent than heroin. Medical experts estimate that just a two to three milligram dose of fentanyl is enough to kill a person. 110 grams of fentanyl is one of the largest single seizures of fentanyl in Kalamazoo County.
