BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department says a 58-year-old man died in the Calhoun County Jail last Friday morning.
The inmate past away at 11:38 a.m. that morning.
The Sheriff’s Department said in a statement released on Tuesday morning that this individual was a U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainee. ICE has identified the man as Jesse Jermone Dean Junior of the Bahamas.
Dean was arrested by ICE on December 31 after he was released from a federal prison in Baldwin. Dean had served 30 years for importing cocaine into the country and other drug charges.
Calhoun County authorities say the death appears to have resulted from natural causes, and is not related to COVID-19.
An autopsy will be performed by the Calhoun County Medical Examiner.
The death is being investigated by the Michigan State Police as an outside agency, which is protocol for situations like this.
