LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A state lawmaker from the Lakeshore is apparently OK with banning guns inside the state Capitol building.
After armed anti-lockdown protesters brought weapons inside while the Legislature was in session last week, state Attorney General Dana Nessel issued an opinion on Monday, based on past court decisions and current laws, that the State Capitol Commission has the authority to prohibit firearms inside of the building. Republican Representative Mary Whiteford of the South Haven area said that she wasn’t aware at the time about how armed these protesters were.
“There are quite a few legislators who do conceal carry, they have their CPL,” she said on “WHTC Talk of the Town” during her monthly appearance on Monday, “but this is the whole CPL issue on steroids, what happened over the past couple of weeks. I don’t think it’s right to allow anybody up on the gallery or up close with those guns.”
Under state law, official opinions of the Attorney General have the weight of law.
