HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Health officials disclosed the report of the first COVID-19 death recorded in Allegan County, among the 61 residents diagnosed with the virus. The number of illnesses had nearly doubled over the last seven days. The number of tests completed has more than doubled in seven days, from 296 to 636.
A statement emailed to media did not disclose the age or gender the the victim, but indicated there were underlying health conditions, but it’s unclear if the underlying conditions made the person more vulnerable to catching the virus or fighting the virus, once infected.
“We send our heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and friends during this time,” said Angelique Joynes, Allegan County’s chief health officer. “This is a tragic reminder of why it is so important for everyone to continue to practice social distancing. We have to work together to protect each other and slow the spread of this virus.”
On Friday, health officials indicated 11 more people working at a meat-packing plant in Plainwell-JBS, had tested postive for the virus. More htan 50,000 Americans have now died of COVID-19.
The county’s statement indicated fighting the virus requires a whole-community effort in following the current best practices:
- Stay at home. Do not go out in public except for essential tasks.
- If you must go out, stay at least 6 feet away from others and avoid any gatherings.
- Wear a face covering while in enclosed public spaces.
- Avoid touching your face.
- Wash your hands frequently for at least twenty seconds.
- Disinfect commonly touched surfaces.
- Check on others. Call your loved ones and neighbors who are most at risk and see how they are doing. If they require something essential, see how you can help.
