WAVERLY TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) — A 25-year-old man was seriously mauled and a woman and small child trapped and emotionally shaken after a pair of pit bull mastiffs got loose from their cages at a kennel in the 39000 block of M-43 in Van Buren County.
Deputies found the man on the ground bleeding profusely and the two dogs barking at a barn, where the 48-year-old woman and 4-year-old boy barricaded themselves to escape the dogs. They were not hurt.
The man suffered a number of puncture wounds and a broken arm. He was taken to Bronson Lakeview Hospital for treatment. One of the dogs had to be shot when it acted aggressively toward responding deputies.
The victim told the deputies the two dogs were fighting, he tried to break it up and they turned on him.
He is expected to survive. The matter remains under investigation.
