BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — Abigail Kopf and Tiana Carruthers, the two survivors of the Feb. 20 shootings in Kalamazoo that left six dead, both continue to make progress toward recovery, and their doctors say both should be very close to functional, if not fully functional, after therapy.
Kopf’s parents say one of the bullets shattered the 14-year-old’s skull. They said that was fortunate, because it allowed her brain to swell, then heal.
They tell the Battle Creek Enquirer she was pronounced dead at one point after the shooting, but after the doctors left, her mother noticed she was breathing.
Kopf’s parents say the teenager isn’t talking yet, but she is able to walk with assistance.
Tiana Carruthers, 25, is still hospitalized, but has already begun therapy at Borgess Medical Center.
